Do you remember when we used to be allowed to walk on the seabed? Those were the days!

Since it is very likely that tiny marine creatures may be harmed when divers walk on the seafloor, it may soon become prohibited by the MMO. However, it would no doubt still be possible to apply for a licence. This will be in line with the MMO’s commitment to enable sustainable development in our seas.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES . . .

100 years ago

In June 1914, The Times reported that a New York diver named Cossaboom died in the River St Lawrence while searching for bodies from the wrecked liner Empress of Ireland. It was thought that the diving operations would be given up and plans to raise the ship abandoned.

 

150 years ago

In June 1864, The Times reported that another attempt was being made by expert divers to recover valuable cargo from the wreck of the Sir Henry Pottinger wrecked two years previously on Cefn Sidan sands, Carmarthen Bay, South Wales.
