Harry Houdini, the great escapologist, secretly patented his clever quick-release dry suit in July 1917. Using this suit he magically disappeared and reappeared during daring underwater escapes, including under the ice of the river Hudson at New York. The two-piece suit incorporated a waist seal which he could operate without any assistance from anyone else.

A tragic accident occurred in Regents Park, London, in January 1867 when several hundred people were skating on the frozen lake. The ice suddenly gave way and a large number of people disappeared under the freezing water. CE Heinke at nearby Great Portland Street sent three of his divers to search for bodies. They dived for up to 20 minutes at a time in the black water and sank into the soft mud at the bottom up to their knees. They found none of the bodies and it seems that most of them had already been recovered by grappling for them.
